After assassination of former Prime Minister Smt Indira Gandhi, the protection of the Prime Minister of India became a critical matter for the country.To ensure proper safety & security of the Prime Minister, a Special Protection Group (SPG) was created through a special enactment in 1988.
Further through an amendment in 2019, the serving Prime Minister & the family members of the Prime Minister were also covered under the Special Protection Group. Prime Minister’s Security during Visits to States were also elaborated. The Special Protection Group (SPG), along with state police and central agencies, follows a detailed security protocol during the Prime Minister’s visits.
Further the Government of India’s classified manual “Blue Book” lays down broad security points & procedures for the security of the Prime Minister during visits to the states.
