
Lt Gen Ravi Shankar
PVSM, VSM — Former Director General Border Roads, India
An alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Lt Gen Ravi Shankar was commissioned into the Madras Sappers (Corps of Engineers) in March 1972. Over a distinguished career in military engineering he rose to serve as the 21st Director General Border Roads, heading the organisation responsible for India’s strategic border infrastructure, and was decorated with the Param Vishisht Seva Medal (PVSM) and Vishisht Seva Medal (VSM).
His appointments included command of an Engineer Regiment, command of an Engineer Brigade, Deputy Military Secretary at Integrated Headquarters of the Ministry of Defence (Army), Commandant of Selection Centre East, Allahabad, and Chief Engineer at Headquarters Eastern Command. He is also an alumnus of the Indian Military Academy, the College of Military Engineering, the Defence Services Staff College, Wellington, and the Army War College, Mhow.
He served with the United Nations as Deputy Chief Engineer at Headquarters UNOSOM and received the General Harkirat Singh Gold Medal for innovation while supporting operations on the Siachen Glacier.
