Lt Gen (Dr) Prakash Menon, PVSM, AVSM, VSM, is Director of the Strategic Studies Programme at the Takshashila Institution, Bangalore. Commissioned into the Indian Army in 1972, he has extensive operational experience commanding counter-insurgency operations in Central, North and South Kashmir, served as Major General (General Staff) of the Army’s Northern Command responsible for operations in Jammu and Kashmir, and was Commandant of the National Defence College, New Delhi.
After retiring in 2011 he continued in government as Military Adviser and Secretary to the Government of India, and from 2015 as Officer on Special Duty in the National Security Council Secretariat. He holds a PhD from Madras University for his thesis on limited war and nuclear deterrence in the Indo-Pak context.
He is also Professor Emeritus at the Trans Disciplinary University, Bangalore, and Adjunct Professor at the National Institute of Advanced Studies, Bangalore. Decorated three times for distinguished service, he researches and writes on the role of force in statecraft, geopolitics and the strategic dimensions of emerging defence technologies.
