Lt Gen Balbir Singh Sandhu
Lieutenant General (Retd), Indian Army — AVSM, VSM; leadership speaker and polo veteran
Lieutenant General Balbir Singh Sandhu, AVSM, VSM (Retd) served in the Indian Army for more than 38 years, holding key appointments across arms and operational environments. An alumnus of the National Defence Academy, he was commissioned in December 1978 and superannuated in 2017, rising to Director General of Supplies and Transport and Director General of Information Technology. His service earned him the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal and the Vishisht Seva Medal.
A dedicated military educator, he served on the faculty of the National Defence Academy, the ASC College and the Defence Services Staff College. He is equally accomplished as a sportsman, having represented India at polo at international level and played for the Indian Polo Association and Indian Army teams; he later served as Vice President of the Indian Polo Association.
Following retirement he earned a PhD examining peace, security and economic development in India’s Northeast in the context of BIMSTEC, and has taught as visiting faculty at IIM Rohtak. A TEDx speaker on leadership, he speaks on getting extraordinary results from ordinary people.
