Amod Kanth

IPS (Retd); former DGP and Founder of Prayas JAC Society

Amod Kanth is a retired Indian Police Service officer who rose to the rank of Director General of Police, serving as DGP of Goa and subsequently of Arunachal Pradesh. Joining the IPS in 1974 and serving primarily in Delhi, he was associated with several landmark investigations, including those concerning the Rajiv Gandhi assassination, the Jessica Lal murder and the BMW hit-and-run case.

A social activist of repute, he founded Prayas at Jahangirpuri in 1988, beginning with 25 children; the organisation, Prayas JAC Society, now runs wide-ranging projects for the care, protection, rehabilitation and socio-economic empowerment of marginalised children, youth and women across multiple Indian states. He served as founding chairperson of the Delhi Commission for Protection of Child Rights (2007-2011).

His decorations include the President’s Police Medal and a gallantry award for protecting civilians during the 1984 anti-Sikh riots in Delhi. He continues to serve as General Secretary of Prayas and has been a member of national-level committees on child labour and juvenile justice.
