Amiya Bhusan Tripathy, IPS (Retd), is a former Director General of Police, Odisha. Born in Sonepur, Odisha, in 1939 and educated at G.M. College, Sambalpur and Ravenshaw College, Cuttack, he joined the Indian Police Service in 1962 and served the Odisha cadre in crucial capacities — including IG of Police (CID, Crime), DG Vigilance and the state’s first IPS Inspector General of Prisons — before retiring as DGP in October 1997.

Tripathy attended the Overseas Command Course at the National Police College, Bramshill (UK) in 1978 and thereafter remained attached to Scotland Yard; in 1981 he studied police IT applications in Tokyo, Los Angeles, New York and at FBI Headquarters in Washington. A forerunner in introducing information technology to Indian policing, he convened the central committee that computerised immigration records at international airports ahead of the 1982 Asian Games, and was a Special Observer to a UN convention on Dimensions of Crime and Criminality.

He represented India three times at INTERPOL conventions in Paris, Bangkok and Delhi, and served as Special Rapporteur of the National Human Rights Commission from 1999 to 2006. His honours include the Police Medal (1979) and the President’s Medal for Distinguished Service (1987).
