Recent floods in Nepal show how heavy monsoon rainfall becomes more destructive when forests, hills, rivers and drainage systems are damaged.

The Himalayan range is shared geographically by several countries, but nature does not recognise political boundaries. Rainfall in the mountains, melting glaciers, landslides and changes in river systems in one area can have consequences far beyond the territory in which they originate.

Protecting the Himalayas must therefore become a common regional responsibility.
