Evolution of Private Security Industry – Problems and Progress

The Private Security Industry in India is expanding rapidly, with an average annual growth rate of 20-22 percent.

The total workforce of the Private Security Industry in India is estimated at 9 Million – which is more than the combined strength of the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Police.

To regulate the Private Security Industry, in the years 2005 – 2006, PSARA (Private Security Agencies (Regulation) Act) was enacted which was accepted gradually by the states in later years.

Some provisions of this Act are not properly worded and their interpretations create hurdles and problems in compliance. Further, Interstate variations in the rules formulated by the States also pose problems for the industry.

In the First Edition of this Interview on PSI our experts have discussed some of these issues.
